Drug Offers Different Way to Fight Cholesterol

Unlike the most common cholesterol-lowering medicines, statins, that work mainly in the liver, a new drug attempts to fight cholesterol by focusing on the digestive tract.

Zetia, or ezetimibe, is unique in that it works by helping block the absorption of cholesterol that comes from food. Unlike some statins, Zetia has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks. This medication complements what you are already doing — whether it’s dieting and exercising alone or also taking a statin.

In clinical studies patients reported few side effects, including diarrhea, joint pains and feeling tired, while taking Zetia.
